The Final Lesson

Let me tell you a story of a 15-year-old girl who never felt she had a place in the world. She was scooped up and spent the next two years with a total knob-head and, after a messy break-up, promptly found herself nestled in a new relationship. Four years, a wedding, and two separations later, she is now 21 years old and finally learning what it means to be herself.

The longer I’m single, the more life’s truths become evident to me. Many things suck about this whole riding solo shindig. For example: taking care of yourself while you’re sick, not having someone to cuddle with on demand, not having someone to rant to when Sheila from accounting scoffs at your new sweater. However, there are also a number of reasons why being single is the bombdiggity. No dinners with the in-laws; you can spoil yourself rotten with new stuff or a fancy dinner when you please; you can make spontaneous plans without having to clear it with your significant other. All in all, you get to live your life for you, which is pretty great.

You get to be free as a wild stallion.

Despite my new-found freedom, I didn’t have a whole whack load of friends, so without a partner in crime, I found life was getting kind of lonely for me. Then I realized something that has gotten me through my past year of singledom. Please excuse me as I drop a mighty nugget of wisdom on you.

The only person that you can count on to be there all day, every day, for the rest of your life is YOU. Everyone else is able to come and go but you can never leave yourself. I want you to go find a mirror right now. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Got that mirror? Good, now look at yourself. Look into those beautiful eyes of yours and say: “I Love You.” You may be your own harshest critic and your own biggest nag, but you are going to be stuck with yourself for the rest of your life so you may as well learn to be your own best friend. Learn to love yourself and adopt this mantra. Now, go treat your amazing self to some ice cream.

Gennifer Taggart

Gen Taggart was born and raised in the city fun forgot. She has what's probably an unhealthy obsession with Doctor Who and is a hoarder of notebooks full of half-finished short stories and tattoo ideas. When not jotting down ideas for the next bestseller or trying to navigate the complexities of being single, she can often be found cuddling with her dogs and binging on Netflix.

About That Horse...

When you break up with someone, people like to tell you to “get back on the horse.” Some people will even try to set you up with some eligible bachelor in their family, like their nephew or grandson. (Note: If this person is a relative of yours as well, run the other way.) The problem, for me anyway, is that dating and social anxiety are like water and oil: They just don't mix. But because you’re too polite and don’t want to sound like you’re too good for them, you just nod and give them a tight grin.
