Kelly Spence on Placement

Tell us Kelly, where is your placement?
Queensway Carleton Hospital. I’m in the Communications office, working with the Director and her coworker. It’s small – only two people – but it’s awesome.

Why did you choose The Queensway Hospital?
Honestly? It was a mix of a few things. My sister volunteered here and liked it, this was where my father went, and the health care field is a secure place to work, and I want to get my foot in the door. It’s got decent benefits, and it’s not as flimsy as some other fields. I was thinking of my life in twenty years.

Do you like it?
I’m in love. The people, the place itself. If I could work here, I’d be content. Everyone I’ve met is so nice, and they go out of their way to help me if I get lost. Judy (the Director) and Calline (her coworker) are amazing. They’ve brought me all around the hospital, we’ve gone out to lunch, they’ve let me sit in on hospital meetings, and get involved with some of the fun things the hospital does. They’re extremely supportive, and really seem to like me. I’m not just a temporary student.

Since you’re just about done Professional Writing, is there any advice you’d like to give to the first years?
Oh god. People probably shouldn’t take advice from me. Study. Really manage your time. For the love of God, don’t procrastinate, the stress will make you drink more. When you’re on placement, show initiative. Be curious. Ask questions. Choose a placement that can help accelerate your career.
